Plot: Los Angeles, 1935. Fritz Lang receives in his hotel apartment the young film amateur Willy, who wants to interview Lang about his cinematic past. As the two men move backwards in time, Lang recalls a friendship dating to the First World War. Lang, then an officer quartered in the home of lawyer Karol Gatnick, developed a relationship with Gatnick and his family. Gatnick and Lang embarked on an amateur film-making venture which attempted to celebrate life amidst the terror of war in northeast Slovenia, then part of the Autro-Hungarian Empire. The wisdom, courage and generosity of spirit exhibited by Gatnick strongly influences Lang to turn toward cinema to express his desires and dreams. Back in 1935, Lang seeks to impart the wisdom given to him to aspiring filmmaker Willy, with bittersweet results in both time-lines.
