Sinopsi:
"The Cement Garden" è un film tratto dal famoso romanzo di Ian McEwan. Sceneggiato e diretto da Andrew Birkin è stato girato vicino ai Docklands, sul Tamigi nel cuore di Londra. In una strana casa, isolata dal mondo reale, quattro bambini orfani vanno oltre i tabù delle relazioni familiari e creano un loro mondo - e una loro moralità ... A 15 anni Jack è un ragazzo selvaggio. A parte l'interesse per la sorella maggiore Julie, è assorbito dalla sua sessualità ed ha poco interesse per suo fratello minore Tom (7) e per sua sorella Sue (11). Quando la madre muore i ragazzi la seppelliscono in un baule pieno di cemento in cantina. La vita continua ma, mentre Julie assume il ruolo materno, Jack pensa solo a se stesso. Anche Tom si rifugia nel suo mondo fantastico vestendosi in modo femminile ed interpretando ruoli con il suo amico William. Sue, l'osservatrice, si ritira in cantina per scrivere il suo diario, seduta accanto alla mamma defunta. La casa si addormenta ... L'arrivo del ragazzo di Julie, Derek, minaccia di riportarli alla realtà. Tuttavia è questa intrusione che sprona Jack a maturare conquistando finalmente l'ammirazione e l'amore di Julie.
After the death of her husband, the mother of Julie, Jack, Sue and Tom begins to suffer from a mysterious illness. Aware that she is going to have to go into hospital she opens a bank account for the children, so that they can be financially self-sufficient and will be able to avoid being taken into care by the authorities. Unfortunately she also dies and Julie and Jack (the older, teenage children) decide to hide her body in the basement so that they can have free reign of their household. Soon Tom has taken to dressing as a girl whilst Sue has become increasingly reticent, confiding only to her diary, meanwhile Jack and Julie sense an attraction developing for each other. However Julie's new beau, Derek, threatens to unearth the many dark secrets within this family as he becomes increasingly suspicious of Jack
