Sinopsi:
Jack, giovane avvocato londinese membro di uno studio legale, è persona un po' superficiale e svagata, ma adora la moglie Sarah e si dà da fare perché la nuova casa sia restaurata al più presto in quanto la donna è agli ultimi giorni di gravidanza. Però costei muore di parto (nasce una bambina, Sarah anche lei) e la vita di Jack è completamente sconvolta. I genitori di lei e la suocera vorrebbero occuparsi della neonata, ma Jack rifiuta. Respingendo anche l'idea di una baby-sitter, Jack comincia ad intenerirsi mentre in casa lo aiuta William, un anziano barbone diventatogli amico Un giorno, in un bar, l'avvocato con la pupa accanto viene servito da una cameriera (Amy, una giovanissima americana), innamorata di Alain, il principale, la quale però si licenzia a causa di un piccolo incidente nel servizio, involontariamente determinato da Jack. Amy, che di esperienze con i neonati non ne ha affatto, si presenta con una valigia a casa di Jack: la tenera bambina l'ha affascinata e, resistendo a i tre nonni nonché al burbero William, riesce a rimanere. Sarah è felice, padre e baby-sitter trovano presto un accordo, mentre Alain, ricomparso un giorno e sospettoso del peggio, viene allontanato. Una sera in cui, nella casa ormai finita e riordinata (William è instancabile) Amy sente che Anna (una collega di Jack innamorata di lui) gli propone un week-end, l'americana ha uno scontro verbale con lui e lo abbandona. Per di più anche William lascia l'amico. Per Jack sono tornati giorni problematici e affannosi; la piccola sembra inquieta, mentre genitori e suocera cercano nuovamente di imporre le loro idee. Frattanto Jack ha visto una elegante coppia di sposi: la donna, sorridente e bene abbigliata, è Amy e solo allora Jack comprende, pur non avendola mai neppure sfiorata, che la ex baby-sitter è per lui una persona indispensabile. Accompagnando a casa sua la intelligente e realistica suocera (la sola che praticamente lo incita a farsi una nuova vita anche nell'interesse della bambina), Jack vi trova Amy. " stato tutto equivoco: non era lei la sposa, solo che aveva in mano il bouquet che quest'ultima aveva lanciato al momento delle nozze con Alain. Amy è ancora libera e lo ama, pronta a fare anche da madre a Sarah.

Plot: Jack always lands on his feet. He lands on his feet when he marries the beautiful Sarah. He lands on his feet when he buys a luxurious new home. However, when Sarah goes into labour, he takes a tumble down the stairs and lands on his head. When he comes around he discovers he is the proud father of a baby girl, but deficient in the spouse department to the tune of 1. The hires the help of a novice nanny, but at the end of the day, it's Jack who's left holding the baby. After the death of his girlfriend Jack has to care for his daughter Sarah on his own. Because his job is too timeintensive that he cannot be with the baby all the time he contracts Amy, a young waitress, as babysitter. As Sarah adopts Amy as substitute mother, Jack starts to look at Amy with different eyes...
