Sinopsi:
Nel 1908 a Pechino nella Città Proibita, l'anziana Imperatrice vedova, prossima a morire, si fa portare, strappandolo alla madre, Pu-Yi, un fanciullo di tre anni e lo designa suo successore. Ultimo della dinastia Ching passerà la sua infanzia nella mitica Città Proibita, signore e padrone assoluto di uno sterminato Impero, dove ogni suo capriccio di bambino Figlio del Cielo è legge per una corte fastosa e corrotta. Storia di una solitudine, quella di un uomo che nacque Imperatore, eternamente prigioniero, tra mura prestigiose prima, in un esilio dorato poi e che morì come un cittadino qualsiasi della Repubblica Popolare Cinese. L’Ultimo Imperatore vuole essere anche il ritratto di un uomo che cerca di riconciliare la sua responsabilità morale con la sua eredità politica.

Plot: A biography of Aisin-Gioro "Henry" Pu Yi, who at the age of three was named the Emperor of China, and dies as a gardener at the Botanical Gardens of Peking. Told in an interesting flashback/flashforward style, we learn of Pu Yi's childhood, the time he spent imprisoned in the Forbidden City, his term as the emperor of Japans Manchukuo, and his eventual release back to public life in 1959. A dramatic history of Pu Yi, the last of the Emperors of China, from his lofty birth and brief reign in the Forbidden City, the object of worship by half a billion people; through his abdication, his decline and dissolute lifestyle; his exploitation by the invading Japanese, and finally to his obscure existence as just another peasant worker in the People's Republic.
