Plot: TV movie that launched the 3rd Star Trek series. In this pilot, Commander Ben Sisko is assigned to a formerly Cardassian space station, now held by the Bajorans. Rechristened Deep Space 9, the station quickly becomes a major trade and exploration center when the first known stable wormhole opens near Bajoran space. In 2366, Captain Jean-Luc Picard was captured by the Borg and was their prisoner for six days. He was assimilated in Locutus and the Borg knew everything he did. A fleet of forty Federation starships attempted to stop the Borg from reaching Earth. But with Picard's knowledge of Federation defense, the Borg defeated them and destroyed thirty nine ships. Of them, the starship Saratoga, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko. Sisko and his son escape the ship's destruction along with most of the crew, but his wife was killed in the battle. Later in 2369, the Cardassians withdraw from Bajor after a long and brutal occupation. The Federation offers assistance to the newly freed planet and takes control of Terok Nor, now renamed Deep Space Nine. Ben Sisko, now commander, is assigned command of the station to help bring Bajor into the Federation. Sisko begins to face his past when he has tense meeting with man he blames for his wife's death, Captain Picard. Not long after, the first stable wormhole is discovered near the station. Sisko and Jadzia Dax enter the wormhole and arrive on a strange planet. There, Sisko encounters the Prophets of Bajor and is presented with a barrage of images, including when he first met his wife and her death. As Sisko faces his past, the new crew of DS9 must protect the wormhole against a Cardassian warship.
